Fun Stuff

I needed something to lighten the mood and I found the following at Cindy Pon’s Blog. Check it out (under my Blog Roll) to see Sarah Ockler’s responses. I thought I’d do my questions a little differently, and ask for my readers’ input.

1. Who is your literary crush? My biggest literary crush is Alessan bar Valentine di Tigana, from Guy Gavriel Kay’s “Tigana”. Who else should make it onto the list? Why? Why do we love these characters so much?

With Alessan, I love the concealed emotion that’s nonetheless obvious. I love it that he holds the fate of his friends, his family, his entire continent in his hands and yet still cares for each and everyone of those people as individuals. I also happen to love self-deprecating strategists and smart people. 🙂

Howard Roark from Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead gets my vote. The most attractive thing about him – even though he could easily control the woman he loves due to her complete devotion to him… he refuses to do so. He requires her to remain as true to her ideals. He insists she be the very best she can be- even when it hurts him. Is there any deeper love?

My literary crush is Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. He is intelligent and masculine without being overly so. His devotion to his friends and loved ones runs very deep and he is willing to come to their aid or defense no matter the cause, without wishing thanks or credit. He loves Elizabeth completely and for herself, her intelligence, her wit, her character. Not all prized in women at that time and so he must defy the conventions of the day to seek the happiness he knows he will find in her.

Anon, I think a lot of us love Darcy! ;>)I seriously considered adding him myself. You write about the nature of his love very well.

Hi, Rabbit! I have to admit, I got turned off of Ayn Rand in college, but your post is close to turning me back on! Howard sounds pretty cool, I have to admit. But tell the truth, Rabbit! I know there were some stranger affections in there…. 😉

Would you believe Tigana has been on my nebulous TBR pile since middle school? I must read that book!

I pondered that question for a while — who would my literary crush be? I even considered Rhett Butler since GWTW is one of my favorite novels, but I'm pretty sure he's not crush material for me. It was just the entire sweeping story and the larger than life characters that drew me in.

I'm going to be pondering this one for a while.

Are you pondering what I'm pondering? Sorry, that word always makes me think of Brain! Yes, I'm still pondering this one. That's why I asked. Who else have I loved? There ARE other characters. So many of them are GG Kay characters, so it's not really fair to keep mentioning him. I love the men from Lions of Al-Rassan, too. And yes, you do need to read Tigana. Everyone must. LOL. Heard from any more editors/agents? I'm still waiting, but now I'm thinking of things I need to go back and tweak, rework, etc. ARGH!
