We’ve all seen the pictures of the devastation left by Irene. (The picture to the left is a random sampling.) My apologies to anyone of my readers who might have seen this on The Book Doctor’s post last week, but I thought it important enough to continue to spread the word. Also, sorry for the delayed post this week. I was on the road all day yesterday and blogging from a smart phone bites. π
The Wells Memorial Library in upstate New York lost all but five of its children’s books to flooding because the titles were stored on bottom shelves so kids could reach them. The library is seeking donations, in particular to rebuild its picture books collection. For more information and pictures, go to katemessner.com. The library is located at 12230 State Route 9N, Upper Jay, N.Y. 12987.
Sad story for th ekids. Wondering if there is a website to contact the many authors of picture books to donate one copy.
So sad. Thanks for sharing this.
Nothing is more tragic than the loss of words. I shall see what I can do.
Thanks for the info!
That's a neat idea, Giora. I DO have connections here in KC and have spread the word. I'll ramp up the efforts. π
Thanks, Cat! I remember how vital my library was to my development and can't imagine doing without. I still live at the library….
I didn't see this info until after I'd made this post, but here's yet another damaged library (at a time when the feds are cutting library support. Naturally).
The Norwich Bookstore, Norwich, Vt., is helping to restock the shelves of the West Hartford (Vt.) Public Library, whose children's collection–and many other titles–were destroyed by flooding from Hurricane Irene. (The damage was much like that suffered by the Wells Memorial Library in Upper Jay, N.Y., as noted here last Friday.)
That's so sad! I hope things work out for the library.
Yeah, which is not to say there aren't families and communities that need the help just as much and sometimes more than the libraries! God bless them all.
Its sad. Hope the library can get back into its previous form.
Me too, Rachna. All of them. π
